A type of locomotive for Central Europe – Used in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy
The BSL Cargo Re486 locomotives are already working well in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. BSL Cargo will be putting them into service in Italy in the near future. They will be used in cross-border operations to and from Italy from the timetable change 2009/2010. This will eliminate the need for locomotive changeovers at the border, savings time and making more efficient use of resources.
Sustainable traction units, sustainable use
BSL Cargo is investing systematically in the most up-to-date multi-system locomotives, which generate both higher energy efficiency and financial benefits in the provision of transportation services.
The new BLS Cargo locomotives (Re485/Re486) are noticeably more environmentally friendly than all their predecessors. For example, the new transistors of the Re486 cause substantially less energy loss in electricity conversion than older machines. Additionally energy is fed back into the electricity grid during braking. Thanks to the most up-to-date technology this energy recovery is now even more efficient.
However, even the most modern vehicles are only beneficial when used correctly. A large portion of the energy saving comes from the locomotive driver’s driving style, who must be trained and made aware of this accordingly.
